Ugears Hurdy-Gurdy 3D Puzzle Model Kit - Laser Cut Wood - 292 Parts

Discover the fun of building a 3D Puzzle Motion Model! This working musical instrument will provide hours of enjoyment after it is built.

Inspired by the art of Celtic and Scandinavian medieval craftsmen and enriched by modern-day smart engineering, UGears presents the Hurdy-Gurdy – the world’s first mechanical musical model and a true gem of the collection. The Hurdy-Gurdy plays dancing melodies, from folk to modern, spanning the centuries from medieval times to present day.

Based on the 15th Century organistrum, an early form of the hurdy-gurdy, Ugears has created an intricately detailed, fully functional version of this medieval instrument. The finished model looks remarkably like the original 16th century hurdy-gurdy, giving it a wonderfully medieval aesthetic.  The body of this attractive and educational model has a highly detailed exquisite décor crafted in a romantic style.

It’s easy to play. To start the music, the player just needs to crank the handle with one hand to kick off a drone sound from the bourdon and melody strings. Pushing the wooden buttons with the fingers of the other hand changes the pitch of the melody string, as "spring-loaded" wooden blocks essentially shorten the string. Ugears will include some musical instructions with the kit to get newbies off to a flying start.

The Ugears Hurdy-Gurdy comes with everything needed for assembly. All the pieces are precut into plywood boards and are easily removed for assembly following the detailed instructions provided.  The only non-wood parts, by necessity, are the two strings that rub against the crank powered wheel and the rosin used to wax it.

Screechy sound but fun build
My first kit of this type. Incredibly intricate, but the directions are step by step and easy to follow. Wax is provided to lubricate moving parts, but after fumbling with some small parts, I discovered a bit of wax on each press in tab makes assembly much easier. There are numerous extra parts, in the off chance one is damaged either in assembly or removal from the sheets. The laser cuts are incredibly fine. Not much of a musical instrument but fun kit to build and looks great.
