Learn to build a fine wood boat and ship models. Start with an 1800's traditional fisherman's Dory at Skill Level 1. Included are 24 pages of instructions, tools, paint, and glue for your first build. Continue at Skill Level 2 with a fully planked historic Norwegian Pram. Finally, the Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack at Skill Level 3 will prepare you for any larger wood ship model you choose; even a 100 gun warship.

Dory

Dories were developed on the East Coast in the 1800’s and were descendants of the French settlers’ bateaux of the 17th and 18th centuries. They were used extensively for fishing and lobstering, since they were easy and inexpensive to build and maintain.

Norweigan Pram

So many would-be modelers want to begin by building a huge 100-gun ship of the line. Most of those very expensive kits get started but never finished. The job is much too complex and the poor builder hasn’t acquired the skills needed.

For this second, intermediate kit, some previous knowledge is necessary in order to be successful. If you have already built the Model Expo Lowell dory kit, you are well prepared. If you haven’t, I strongly recommend you do so first, as you will learn valuable techniques, tips and methods that will come in very useful for this model. I’d hate for you to give up in frustration because you lack some basics first.

These boats were developed in the late 1800s for fishing and lobstering and were prevalent in Muscongus Bay, located on theEast Coast, north-east of Portland, Maine. They had sleek lines and were fast sailing with two wet tanks to hold their catch

After building the Model Expo's Model Airways Sopwith Camel F.1 which was a hinted-for gift from my wife and grown daughters, I was introduced to the quality & detail of Model Expo's models & to their great & friendly customer support. As I was a "stick & tissue" model aircraft hobby builder for 30+ years the change to using material other than balsa wood, tissue paper & plastic was interesting & enjoyable. The detail, realism & well written documentation was above my expectations. I decided to challenge myselft, at age 78, to learn about building wooden model ships by taking advantage of a sale price on the Model Shipways 3 ship Shipwright Combo kit. Highlights of the experience: + Forced to learn the strange shipwright terms, building component names & construction terms. + Easy to understand illustrated instructions/plans. + Quality & precision of the components & the small parts organization & packaging. + The no charge policy of replacement of any component regardless of the reason :ie missing, broken, lost, dog ate it ... whatever! + Sensible progression of ship building techniques & terminology from the Dory to the Pram and finally to the Lobster Smack ... rowboat to sailing ship. In conclusion, the Shipwright 3 ship kit encouraged me to move on to another Model Shipways build ... the Fair American privateer Brig which I have just recently started.

Great way to start model ship building! I am an experienced modeler, having built plastic models and balsa airplanes. I got a few kits form auctions and quickly realized that they were over my head. I ran across this series of kits and could not be happier with the results. These kits are a great way to start wooden ship building!
