For beginners and experts alike. A true plank-on-frame armed captain's longboat in 1:24 scale measuring. With guns!

Every wood detail in the original longboat has been captured in 9 sheets of laser-cut basswood (no plywood) and over 60 basswood strips and dowels.

Thirty-six cast Brittania metal (lead-free pewter) detail parts capture every iron fitting as well as the cannon and swivel guns.

Brass split rings, rods, eyebolts, nails, parrels and Belaying Pins are machined and polished. Thirty-four yards and five diameters of jewelry, no-stretch and easy to knot nylon rigging replicates the original.

Twenty-two walnut blocks and deadeyes compliment the rigging lines. All the decorations you see along the bulwarks and transom of the longboat are neither decals nor painted; they are photo-etched brass and are included.

The 3 sheets of 34 x 44" plans are true to model size.

The 48 page instruction booklet with over 130 color photos leave nothing to the imagination. It is the most comprehensive, step-by-step instruction manual ever created for a wood ship model.

I have been building this longboat for some time now. Although it looks like a simple model, I would not recommend this model for the inexperienced modeler. Many considerations, such as removing the bevel caused by the laser cut where the frames join the keel must be addressed to insure proper alignment. Unfortunately the well drawn plans are larger than the model by half an inch. The rigging line provided is roughly twice the size it should be. The oarlocks should not be added to the cap rail until the end of the build because it is easy to break them if they are on in the middle of the build. Having said that, I made the changes to the building and materials as discussed and now will add the sails as the rigging implies.

This was my first wooden ship every built and I have to say that it turned out very good. The kit itself is pretty challenging for a beginner but I have lots of experience in modeling plastic and am a avid woodworker so that helped me quite a bit. I would say that if I had to do it over again that I would start off with the three kit shipwright series. You can't beat the value of those three kits and the skills that you will acquire. This is an excellent kit with the exception of the rigging line that was supplied in the kit for the deadeyes was too large. I had to contact Model Shipways and have them send me smaller line.

I have been building this since 8 July 2019 and have declared it finished as of 12 April 2020, with the exception of oars, ,which I am working on now. I agree with the other reviewer. It looks simple but there is a lot of building. Not for an inexperienced modeler . The plans are out of scale and there appears to be some "rogue" cad lines. It would have been helpful to have at least one or two cross-sections (Port/Starboard.) The rigging supplied was to large for the blocks and deadeyes. The large elevation showing all rigging can be confusing. Also it seems that the boom and gift should be rigged before doing the mast stroud lines. I did it per instructions with minor difficulity. Some simplified rigging sketches might help. The instruction manual is well thought out and pictures are good but could be a little bit bigger. Before a modeler starts on this project they should check all available sources and see how other modelers built this ship. Overall I would recommend for a mid-level or experienced builder.

This kit has some of the best instructions and build plans I have ever seen. The kit has detail parts like the cannons and Cannon balls that really complement the kits overall appearance and appeal. Everything was easy to locate and remove from the laser cut sheets. Overall I would say between the instructions and quality of materials helped me build to a better level than my skills are, Great Quality and instructions, you won't be diappointed.

I've been building wooden ships for many years. This is kit is not for an unexperienced builder. I found this kit a bit challenging, but very enjoyable to build. There are some parts that you need to make templates for and cut out. But hey, if they were easy to build, they wouldn't be any fun!
