This is a good entry boat to experience plank on frame methods. It is also a good prerequisite to the bigger version MS1460. This version has different challenges since it is a smaller in size, but this experience will be beneficial if you build the larger MS1460 which has other challenges that have to be addressed. I have built both with sails. In both, the bowsprit was mounted later in the build. The oar locks were mounted at the end of the build to prevent them from breaking.

Mr.
This is an excellent kit by Chuck Passaro. The instructions are detailed and to the point, as with the other kits he designed. The problem is with the rigging line provided with the kit. The parts list of the kit I received includes: WP1241 0.08" Manila Hemp 10yds Jewelry Nylon .2mm WP1261 0.021" Black 2 feet WP1260 0.010" Black 4 feet Sub with WP1218 Jewelry Nylon . 2mm I checked the contents of the kit; it matches the parts list. So I started building the longboat without any difficulty. My problem started with the rigging. The lines used in the instructions are: 0.012 tan line (most of the lines) 0.021 black line (shrouds) 0.018 black line (pendants, fore stay) Only the second item, 0.021 black line is provided in the kit. I had to use material left over from previous builds. The on-line parts list, however, is different from what I received. This part list includes 10 yds of 0.012" Manila Hemp, 2 feet of 0.021" black and 4 feet of 0.012 black line. This last one could be used for the pendants and back stays, but it still does not match the size given in the instructions. I would advise anyone buying this kit to check the rigging lines before starting to build the longboad.

Exceptional details, small model!
I bought this as a first foray into model shipbuilding, after reading some reviews about the stellar instructions and plans. I quickly learned that this was not a starter level kit- the planking (1/32x3/32”) and scale alone make this a challenge. I just started on the sailing pram from model shipways and the size of everything in that kit makes it evident how much more advanced this kit is in comparison. I built this between thanksgiving weekend and the first week of Jan, spending countless hours in enjoyment, and frustration. As someone that’s inclined to this sort of thing, I’d recommend others starting out to look at the shipwright series sold here first. As noted, it would be a shame to miss out on this incredible hobby by getting frustrated and giving up. A few notes, I found a few discrepancies between the plans and the drawings (the boards for the thwarts (seats) are a different size, and the reference for the height / thickness of the boards that support those thwarts was inconsistent. It would also be nice to see better labeling of the wire and string sizing, and when to use which string. The quantity of the thickest string for tying the mast to the chainplates was just enough to do the job. The color of the thread given doesn’t always match the pictures in the manual, making it hard to know which to use - such as for seizing blocks. It was also strange to me that some laser cut parts included seconds (false keel) while a number of parts that would have been easier laser cut (mast topper “yolk/prongs “ for the mast pieces, cap rails) were expected to be made using scrap, and often difficult to drill holes in without splitting what would have been cake work for the laser. No rhyme or reason evident as to why some pieces weren’t pre-cut. This all being said, there was more than enough supply to redo mistakes and add your own touches. I am and will be building more ships, the shipwrights series next before starting the Emma C. Berry from model shipways.

Mr.
This is a great model, beautiful historic boat, but a critical part, the mast, was damaged on arrival. One end was crushed so it will be difficult to fabricate without shortening it. I cannot locate an email to get a replacement.

Prof,
Magnificent model, admirably made, Wooden parts fit very closely and most need a very slight adjustment to enable an easy fit. First class materials and in sufficient quantity. I really enjoyed this build.
