Master Korabel Cannon Jolle Gunboat 1801  Plank-on-Bulkhead Wood Ship Model Kit 1:72 Scale

A note from Marc Mosko ...president, Model Shipways. I am almost embarrased to say that these Russian kits have raised the bar for every other kit manufacturer in Europe and ... alas ... in America. If you aren't hollering with delight when you open this small kit I'll eat my hat.

18th century Jolle boats were small and light craft that could navigate the ice-scoured channels leading into the Baltic fjords. Equipped with both sails and oars, they were agile and easily maneuverable. They were armed with the larger caliber guns normally found on gunboats. The design is attributed to the Swedish naval architect, Frederik Chapman.

Master Korabel of Russia recreates a wood model of the Jolle in exceptional detail and historic accuracy. All wooden parts are laser cut. The ship model kit includes photo-etched brass sheets, machine turned cannon barrel, three diameters of rigging line and sailcloth. The hull planking is pre-cut by lasers to exact shape, eliminating the need for cutting and sanding. A booklet of color photos supplements, clear plans and English instructions make building this wood ship model a pleasure for the experienced modeler.

Avoid if experienced
Building this model was one of the most frustrating experience in my shipbuilding career (built about 30 kits so far in the last 7 years). The pieces are tiny and fit together precisely to the nearest mm which leaves no room to play at all, expect the builkheads to break, and half of the wood is 'burned' by the laser which means alot of tiny sanding. Some parts better to scratch build. It's kind of like building a plastic kits and it reminded me of the 'young modeler' models from South Korea. ALL the fittings are photo-etched. The pictures are very detailed however. Again, a mistake on my part by not looking at the measurements of this kit when I saw the sale price last month :-) . Avoid if you are an experienced wood modeler.
