Ancient Roman Catapult 1st Century BC
Mantua's range of period weapon kits all feature quality hardwood, complete with brass, metal and wood fittings. The wood is all laser cut for accurate assembly and the manual is clear and detailed with comprehensive illustrations. The kits are supplied with a wooden display base complete with a brass engraved nameplate. They make excellent display pieces and with some 18 models currently in the range there is surely something to interest everyone.This kit builds into a nice model of a1st century Roman catapult. The original weapon used a simple launching arm based on the bow principle. It was very effective in the capture of walled towns, fortresses and citadels. It launched rocks or stone balls to break down fortifications. At times it hurled leather bags full of sand to blinded soldiers, horses and riders.
An original operating catapult can be seen in the Castel Sant Angelo Museum in Rome.
