The schooner Bluenose has a very special place in the history of navigation and yachting. Built to fish off the Newfoundland coast, the ship soon turned out to be such a fast sailer that she won all the great classical regattas along the USA's Eastern coast. She was built in Nova Scotia in 1921, and shipwrecked near Haiti in 1946. A true copy - Bluneose II - was launched in 1964. 43cm x 52cm x 9cm 1:100 Scale

I had just finished my first build, Model Shipways 18th Century Armed Longboat. For my next build I wanted to try a kit with sails. I seen this kit at a great price so I purchased it and went to work. This kit is rated for (advanced beginners). Some of the things that made this kit difficult for me was. 1. Poor, poor building instructions. I mean, I could have done a much better job and this was only second kit! 2. Bad plans! The plans showed no measurements whatsoever. The rigging plan was not clear at all. The plan showed no planking details, and indicated rigging that needed double blocks but the kit and parts list only provides for single blocks. 3. Kit was missing various components and had other pieces that didn't even go with the kit. 4. Their were lots of plastic parts that in my opinion should have been either wood or metal. They provided metal life rafts but have a plastic anchor! 5. Just enough material is provided to build this kit so don't mess up or you will have to get more material. 6. Rigging line is terrible. I used my own. 7. The deck comes in two sections and you have to trace the planking lines from the plans onto the kit supplied deck with a pencil. Older kits show the deck is pre stamped. 8. The Bluenose II had two props which is not included with this kit. Some of the pluses I found in this kit. 1. The metal fittings are made of brass and are beautiful. I almost didn't want to paint the life rafts. If only the anchors had be brass instead of stupid plastic! 2. The customer service at Billings Boats really surprised me when I was ordering missing parts. I received parts in less time than it takes some companies here stateside. 3. Billings has a Facebook site just for modelers building their kits which is sort of neat. 4. If you want a kit that makes you do some thinking, research and use your imagination without costing you an arm and a leg, this is it. All in all this kit turned out pretty darned good for me. I believe I paid around $60.00 for the kit and leaned a lot during this build. It's not that bad a kit for the money if you can get it at a good price and you are the kind of person that is experienced at building model ships or does not need set by step instructions to complete these type of kits. My recommendation is save your money if possible. There are many more Bluenose kits out their that are much nicer than this one.
